Home 9 Criminal Defense 9 Preparing for a court hearing: what you should know

Eventually, everyone will encounter a legal issue of some sort. Whether it is a divorce, a criminal charge or a child custody dispute, you may need to attend a court hearing for it. This means that you will receive a notice in the mail of your hearing. Then, you need to attend it in person at your local courthouse.

Court hearings can seem intimidating, but they do not need to be. If you know what to expect and how to prepare, your hearing will seem much less daunting.

Your hearing: what to expect

On the day of your court hearing, you would wear business casual attire. Though the court does not forbid shorts, tank tops and casual shoes you will make a better impression with formal clothes. Avoid flashy accessories or jewelry.

When you enter the courthouse, a security team will have you walk through a metal detector to ensure that you do not have any weapons. At the hearing, both sides will present their cases and the judge will issue a decision. This is why it is wise to have lawyer: they can help you understand the court proceedings, develop a legal strategy and present your case in the best light.

Do I need an attorney?

Many people choose to represent themselves in court. It is your right to act as your own counsel. However, even though it is possible to achieve a successful outcome without an attorney, it is not always wise to forego representation. Without an attorney, you will have to navigate the complex legal system on your own. A mistake or missed deadline could cost you your entire case. Your lawyer will help you build a persuasive case as well as explain in more detail what you can expect from court hearings.
