Home 9 Drug Charges 9 What happens if I violate my parole after a drug charge?

Parole violations can have serious consequences which is why individuals accused of violating their parole should understand what parole is, what the consequences of a parole violation are and what they may be able to do about it. Understanding how to navigate the criminal justice process and what to do about a parole violation are important.

Parole is a conditional release granted before the term of the accused individual’s prison sentence ends. Parole is not the same as probation which is an alternative to a prison sentence. Violating either parole or probation, however, can carry serious consequences for the accused individual. Conditions of parole can include to obey all laws, not abuse alcohol or drugs and may prohibit the accused individual from associating with certain people. Conditions can also include promptly informing the court of any address or job changes.

If parole is violated, the accused individual may face several different consequences. Consequences of a parole violation can include a warrant being issued for the accused individual’s arrest; revocation of the accused individual’s parole which may require them to return to prison to complete the remainder of their sentence; an extension of the period of time the accused individual is required to be on parole; additional criminal charges for alleged crimes committed while on parole; and fines.

If an accused individual is facing an alleged parole violation, it is important for them to know that having a criminal defense is important. Parole violations are serious and should be treated accordingly by those facing them.
